Experiments with Max/MSP and the Kinect

I am currently working on controlling Max/MSP using the Microsoft Kinect. This short video is a demonstration of my first experiment.

Sounds are creating using bandpass vocoding on pulse trains. Hand hits control pitch and harmony changes, resynthesized sounds (sine, saw, noise, pulse train) and pulse train period. Hand gestures control volume (y axis), panning (x axis across the screen), resynthesized pulse train width (y axis), and impulse pulse train width (z axis).

"What Hath God Wrought" Video

Eric Souther, my colleague in New Media at IU South Bend created this video for my piece "What Hath God Wrought"

The recording is by my new music group, pulsoptional, and appears on our first album available here.

"What Hath God Wrought" was the first telegraphed message sent from Washington, DC to Baltimore by Samuel Morse on May 12, 1844. The music is derived from the dots and dashes of this message. The video depicts the three-part form of the music (Encoding, Transmission, Decoding), using found footage for the outer sections and a present day trip from the U.S. Capitol to Baltimore.

pulsoptional Residencies

In March 2012 pulsoptional, Durham's Band of Composers, is in residency at IU South Bend and Alephi University. The residencies include readings of student compositions written especially for pulsoptional along with the puls::plus concert. This concert highlights music from nearly a decade of pulsoptional's activity, from early pieces that have not been publicly performed in several years to recent works currently in preparation for their next recorded release.

In addition to these staples of the group's repertoire, puls::plus features two premieres: Sidney Boquiren's ritualistic soundtrack for Cuttlefish by filmmaker Jane Pickett; and a collective arrangement of O Superman (for Massenet), Laurie Anderson's enduring 1981 classic.

Press about the South Bend event can be found here.
